FAQs

At Castle Environmental we pride ourselves on our ability to find solutions for our customers. As leaders in the hazardous waste industry, we are best placed to dispose of a variety of complex wastes, in large quantities, giving value for money and meeting environmental targets.

If you have further questions about your specific requirements, please get in touch with us.

What sort of sites do you operate?

All 3 of Castle Environmental’s facilities are aqueous treatment plants offering in-house treatment of a variety of liquids, sludges, powders & solids.

Our sites operate to a very high standard with ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and ISO 45001 accreditations. Castle Environmental are proud to be a key contributor to the UK hazardous waste market, through their ability to be the end disposal site for a variety of waste streams.

With the ability to offer in-house processing for both tankered and packaged waste deliveries, the sites are ideally suited to waste producers looking to send their waste directly to its final treatment location.

What type of customers do Castle Environmental provide their services to?

Castle Environmental deal with waste producers and other Waste Treatment Companies that require a high calibre service provider with a direct route to end disposal.

An example of the types of industries Castle Environmental support includes Utilities & Power, Energy From Waste, Chemical Manufacturing, Oil & Gas, Warehousing & Distribution and Industrial Cleaning.

Due to the unique nature of our 3 treatment sites, Castle Environmental also offer support to a large number of third-party Waste Management Companies who rely on us to process their customers’ wastes.

How has Castle Environmental developed the sustainability and environmental performance of its 3 treatment plants?

As members of the Environmental Services Association we are committed to reducing dependence on landfill-based disposal routes. Over several years, a considerable programme of research and development has enabled us to convert a number of our process to become zero-to-landfill operations.

Whilst Castle Environmental are market leaders in the recycling of certain wastes, we are still working hard to increase the percentage of waste we recycle. It is this ongoing drive for improvement that sees us improve our environmental performance year-on-year.

Our technical assessment allows us to fully understand the nature of the waste that our customers need to dispose of and to look for the best possible solution, with minimal environmental impact.

Because our treatment facilities allow us to process wastes ourselves, rather than relying on third party treatment plants, we have complete knowledge of how the waste is disposed of and are able to exert full control over the sustainability of the operation.

I’m interested in joining Castle Environmental, but do you only hire Chemists?

Whilst we do ensure a high proportion of our staff are degree-qualified Chemists, for our team to thrive we need our staff to come from a variety of backgrounds. We are committed to a high standard of training and professional development to ensure our staff keep us as leaders in the industry. The internal training regime is complemented with the use of specialist third-party trainers and through our staff attending off-site courses. Many of our team are long-standing employees, due to the excellent training and investment that they receive as part of the company.

How can I see your policies, certificates and site rules?

All of our documentation is available to view on our Duty of Care page. We also welcome existing or potential customers to any one of our sites, throughout the year, so please get in touch if you would like to visit us, or for assistance in viewing our policies.

How do you track and trace my waste?

Prior to any waste being received at a Castle treatment plant, our Technical Sales Office always completes a full technical assessment of the waste.

This assessment takes into account the EWC Code, Hazard Code and UN Number of the waste in question. Through their considerable levels of training and experience, the team are able to cross-reference the information with a strict legal framework to ensure the waste streams in question are routed to the most suitable treatment processes.

At the point that waste is received by Castle Environmental, acceptance testing is carried out at all 3 of the treatment plants. Upon completion of the acceptance testing, each item of packaged waste is given its own barcode and is scanned onto our stock inventory system.

By scanning waste as it arrives onto the site and then as it’s processed through the site, we are able to provide full traceability of materials arriving on site.

I need to understand my waste needs better - do you do waste audits?

We are pleased to offer free waste audits and consultations for hazardous and liquid waste.

Audits can be carried out remotely or in person, and will give the customer access to our highly trained and experienced Technical Assessment team.

I’m producing a high volume of liquid tanker waste, can you deal with such large bulk waste?

Our ability to collect large volumes of liquid on a flexible basis means we can be trusted with numerous high-profile and operationally critical requirements.

Castle is routinely required to assist with projects that see hundreds of tonnes of material delivered to our treatment plants in a very short period of time. Wastes can be delivered in bulk tankers or packages (e.g. drums or IBCs) to any of our 3 treatment plants.

Our Stoke-on-Trent and Cardiff sites have generous sewer discharge consents, which makes these sites advantageous for bulk liquid processing. An example of types of liquid waste received across the 3 facilities include:

  1. Acidic/Alkaline Effluent

  2. Chemical Cleaning Effluent

  3. Oil contaminated waters

  4. Glycol and Glycol washings

  5. Flood-waters

  6. Landfill/Composting Leachate

  7. General chemical effluent
